Binnies and Rezatec showcase their satellite-based intelligent dam monitoring system
On Wednesday, 10 March, Binnies and Rezatec hosted a launch event for their intelligent dam monitoring system (iDMS), in front of some of the UK’s largest dam owners, that included a live demonstration showcasing the capabilities of the iDMS tool.
The event commenced with a video that captured the unique and exciting nature of the iDMS system and depicted the exclusive qualities of the tool and its potential to positively disrupt the utility sector.
Binnies All Reservoirs Panel Engineer Rachel Pether opened the event with a welcome introduction that focused on what iDMS means to her, having embarked on her journey alongside Rezatec almost two years ago.
Rachel challenged reservoir owners to consider how well they really know their dams and highlighted that every dam has a unique Basal Rhythm that determines how it will react to environmental changes, such as the reservoir’s water level and temperature.
Rachel explained that iDMS uses geospatial data to identify normal dam behaviour, or the Basal Rhythm, based on retrospective information, then processes ongoing data to identify anomalies from this Basal Rhythm. iDMS fuses Binnies’ dam expertise and digital ecosystem services with Rezatec’s leading geospatial artificial intelligence techniques, to help dam owners to understand the Basal Rhythm of their dams, deliver strategic reservoir improvements, manage risk and to realise operational and commercial benefits.
Camilla Braithwaite, Product Manager at Rezatec, explained how the iDMS uses big data from long-term retrospective and ongoing satellite monitoring, at a weekly frequency, along with data science and analytics. The geospatial data pinpoints millimetre movement in the dam’s structure. In addition, iDMS analyses changes in the moisture levels and vigour of vegetation, both of which are indicators of seepage.
Following the initial presentation, guests were transported into virtual demonstration rooms, where they were able to witness iDMS in action for the first time. The intuitive features of the iDMS platform and how it can be tailored to meet clients’ needs were explained. iDMS is part of Binnies’ digital ECO-X suite of products and is a cloud-based ecosystem, which enables the integration of multiple data sets across multiple partners providing asset management tools that integrate seamlessly with our clients’ IT systems. www.eco-x.tech.
