Binnies chief engineer joins IET Quality Assurance Committee

Engineering plays a critical role in solving complex problems in the world around us, helping to provide and support a sustainable future. As methods and practices are continually evolving because of the ever-changing nature of technology, resources and society’s needs, standards must be consistently reviewed and ensured. Binnies recognises the importance of this and believes that to enhance lives, communities and the environment, we must all play our part in the drive for best practice.

Andrew O’Sullivan, Binnies E&ICA Chief Engineer, has been with the company for 10 years and has 46 years’ industry experience. He recently accepted a place on the Quality Assurance Committee of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). One of the key roles of the committee is to ensure that the IET discharges any responsibilities that the Engineering Council, the overarching body for all professional engineering institutions, has given it. This involves raising queries and managing an organisation’s overall risk element, ensuring conformity to the rules and regulations across the board.

Andrew will combine the committee role with the other voluntary work he undertakes for the IET: fellowship assessments and advising on professional registration.

Andrew shares his motivation and attraction towards the committee role: “I would say the biggest driver is that for those who get to my position, it should be automatic to want to give something back. This is because we have learned from lots of people in our past. Now, I want to give something back to those I work with and to those who will follow in my footsteps.”

This role enables Andrew to give back to the wider engineering community and, in doing so, help to inspire the next generation of engineers and technicians and future-proof the industry.
