Binnies strengthens its reservoir team with new hire Matthew Coombs
Matt Coombs joins Binnies as reservoir delivery director. He moves from Arcadis, where he was a technical director and UK Community of Practice lead for dams and reservoirs. Matt is a civil engineer with 26 years’ experience in the industry and he is a Supervising Engineer under the Reservoirs Act.
Since 2016, Matt has been the reservoir compliance manager (seconded) for Natural Resources Wales (NRW). He managed the capital and operational programme and assisted NRW through a significant period of change resulting from the introduction of new Welsh legislation. This led to the registration of 30 reservoirs with associated Section 10 inspections and the delivery of more than 160 Measures in the Interests of Safety; NRW is now 100% compliant with the Reservoirs Act. Over this period, Matt also managed an All Reservoirs Panel Engineer/supervising engineer contract with the Environment Agency in the Anglian region (32 reservoirs) as well as undertaking works with the Canal & River Trust and other undertakers on numerous reservoir capital projects. Before working with NRW, Matt spent 15 years with Arcadis/Hyder and 11 years with Thames Water, where he worked on various water treatment works, sewage treatment works, network and flood alleviation projects for clients in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
Matt joins Binnies at an exciting time in the organisation’s 100-year history. Binnies is the new trading name for the Black & Veatch water and environment businesses in Europe and Asia after they joined leading integrated environmental, engineering and technical services provider RSK Group in January 2021. Binnies specialises in water and and environmental services.
Binnies’ established reservoirs team has a long history and pedigree in designing, supervising and inspecting dams in the UK and across the world, including high-profile projects such as Llyn Brainne in the UK, High Island Dam in Hong Kong and Mangla Dam in Pakistan. Binnies is also leading the reservoir industry’s digital transformation with its intelligent dam monitoring system, iDMS.
