Binnies wins engineering excellence award in Hong Kong
Binnies, along with client the Drainage Services Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and contractor the Build King–Kum Shing joint venture, has received an award at The Association of Consulting Engineers of Hong Kong 2020 Annual Award ceremony. The award recognises the engineering excellence, ingenuity and efforts towards sustainability of the project team and Binnies’s role as the engineering consultant in delivering the ongoing Sha Tau Kok sewage treatment works expansion project.
The Sha Tau Kok sewage treatment works, which was commissioned in 1989, is being expanded to meet the needs of the region’s continual development. In pursuit of excellence, the project team has integrated innovative construction approaches and developed sustainable solutions for the expansion work.
“The award reflects the project team’s hard work and dedication to overcoming the time constraints and site challenges,” said Andy Kwok, Managing Director of Binnies in Hong Kong. “In the 18 months since the contract started, a temporary sewage treatment plant has been commissioned while maintaining continuous plant operation and without any service interruption to the community.”

Because of the requirement for in-situ provision with increased treatment capacity, the temporary sewage treatment plant has adopted a moving bed bioreactor process with a high treatment efficiency to meet the stringent effluent standards while fitting all the treatment units into the limited footprint. This successful and first full-scale application of a moving bed bioreactor process in Hong Kong is widely recognised by the industry.
Various innovation and technologies, including a design for manufacture and assembly approach for fabricating and installing the electrical and mechanical equipment; digitalisation of site management; and building information modelling, have also been adopted to streamline the construction programme and enhance the project’s efficiency, safety and quality.
