Binnies wins NEC major awards in recognition of its project innovation and sustainability excellence

Binnies, together with the Drainage Services Department (DSD) of The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the contractor, Build King–Kum Shing Joint Venture, won the NEC Contract Innovation of the Year Award 2021 for the ongoing Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works (STKSTW) expansion project.  The project also took home first runner-up for the NEC Sustainability and Climate Resilience Award of the Year 2021. These awards recognise the remarkable achievements of the innovative collaborative partnership between DSD, Binnies and Build King-Kum Shing Joint Venture in the project implementation.

The NEC Awards were established in 2015 by the UK Users’ Group of the NEC, an organisation created by the Institution of Civil Engineers in the United Kingdom with the aims of commending excellence in project delivery and showcasing examples of good practice through collaboration around the world.

“This is the first Construction 2.0 pilot project for DSD, and the project team has been working collaboratively and acting in a strong spirit of mutual trust, which has successfully resolved a range of challenges,” said Andy Kwok, Managing Director of Binnies Hong Kong. “The project team has also established and demonstrated the concept of green and SMART project management and made concerted efforts to adopt and pilot different advanced technologies for the implementation of the project.”

The project aims to increase the treatment capacity to more than three times that of the existing STKSTW to cope with the region’s continual development. It is a multi-disciplinary project that comprises a wide range of construction activities and faces a range of challenges, including the construction of a temporary sewage treatment plant having a very small footprint within the existing plant site.

In addition to the utilisation of various innovations and smart applications, the STKSTW project has implemented a carbon audit and participated in various environmental assessment schemes to promote sustainable development and green building.

The awards recognise the team’s commitment to and implementation of best practices towards construction sustainability.

Additionally, the construction of a supplementary sewage rising main between Tung Chung and Siu Ho Wan and associated works delivered by DSD, Binnies and Penta-Ocean–Wo Hing Joint Venture was first runner-up for the NEC Water Contract of the Year Award 2021 in recognition of its best-practice collaboration, achieved through the early resolution of project risks to enhance management efficiency and cost effectiveness for the project.

“NEC contracts have been gaining endorsement from government and industry,” Andy Kwok added. “With these fruitful results and our unrivalled track record in delivering projects on time and on budget, we look forward to further collaborative partnerships for implementing our projects in the future.”

In response to the HKSAR’s promotion of the NEC form of contract for the implementation of public works, Binnies Hong Kong has been actively using a diverse range of project management contracts under NEC. These enhance collaboration and stimulate good project management, and Binnies Hong Kong will continue to explore effective platforms for using its values to create new possibilities through innovative approaches, deliver functional infrastructure and elevate the quality of life of the community.
