Binnies’ work strengthened a century-old underground service reservoir
An underground Romanesque waterworks structure built in 1904 was revealed during the demolition of the Sham Shui Po service reservoir at Bishop Hill in Shek Kip Mei, Hong Kong. To conserve this heritage structure, which has been accorded Grade 1 historic building status, Binnies helped to assess its structural stability and undertook a detailed design of the temporary strengthening work in preparation for future revitalisation and conservation of the site.
The design concept of the rectification work explored the possibility of revealing the heritage structure so the public could tour this century-old building, taking in the dramatic spaces and the play of light across the historic stone columns and masonry arches.
A glass roof was installed to cover the exposed section of the reservoir. Besides maximising the penetration of natural daylight into the building, the skylight also provided protection against the forces of nature for the interior artefacts. Timber arches reinforced by the steel frame supporting the glass roof provided a solid brace for the defective brick arch and plain concrete arch slab without damaging the antique surface.
The underground service reservoir was originally a confined space. Ventilation systems, pathways and boardwalks, as well as emergency exits, have been installed so that visitors can safely tour the reservoir. This preliminary restoration has successfully retained the historic architecture of the century-old reservoir while preserving this significant waterworks heritage site for future revitalisation.
