Building the skills pipeline

The water sector is facing many challenges related to climate change and water scarcity, but the infrastructure sector is expected to face a deficit of a quarter of a million skilled workers.

This is impacting not only the water companies themselves but also the whole supply chain. Utility Week partnered with Radius Systems to publish a new report, featuring views from Scott Aitken, Managing Director of Binnies UK, alongside leaders at water companies. The report, titled “Building the skills pipeline – how the water network can get it right first time”, explores how the sector is tackling the shortage of skilled workers.

The report covers the following topics:

  • Can the industry respond to new skills needs?
  • Is it possible to expand the recruitment ‘universe’?
  • What support does the industry need from government, the regulator or other bodies?

Scott stresses that the problem is already here. Recruitment and training are already significant costs, and meeting future requirements will test the industry.
