Expansion of Binnies’ data science expertise
David Smith joins Binnies and brings many years’ experience of delivering data analytics solutions into water companies and other asset-rich organisations. David is an experienced data science professional with a track record of delivering successful digital projects, typically optimising high value investment plans for critical infrastructure.
David joins Binnies from Jacobs, where he was part of the team exploring the optimum phasing of water resource options for the Severn Thames Transfer Strategic Resource Option (STT SRO). Given data about the long-term (80-year) deployable output required, the cost, yield and environmental impact of the potential options, David developed a generic algorithm to determine the least-cost phasing (i.e., when to build each option). This was used to explore a range of possible options in terms of costs and environmental impacts and to explore the impact of uncertainty around future demand.
Before this role, David spent many years working for SEAMS and brings a delivery-focused, value-driven approach to his work, making best use of the available data and resources. He has a history of introducing digital innovation in water and other utilities.
David said, “The Binnies sense of purpose (enhancing lives, communities and the environment) fits perfectly with the satisfaction I find in helping clients meet their goals in a challenging and uncertain world, delivering vital services to people while benefitting society and minimising environmental impacts. I can’t wait to start adding further value to Binnies’ digital products with the application of data science and machine learning.”
David joins Binnies’ Digital Products and Services team that supports digital innovation combined with engineering experience to provide cost-effective, cloud-based digital products to a diverse range of clients. “I am really excited to welcome David Smith as our Lead Data Scientist to the Digital Products and Services team. His experience with data science, decision support and whole-life cost optimisation will be of great value when helping our clients solve their problems,” Jo Kelsey, Head of Digital Products and Services, commented. “I look forward to him joining our talented and committed team and building the data science practice within Binnies.“
