Fowlea Brook scheme wins double success at West Midlands ICE Awards
WSP Binnies is proud to celebrate the success of the Fowlea Brook Flood Risk Management Scheme, which has won both the Team Achievement Award and the Carbon and Sustainability Award at the 2026 ICE West Midlands Awards.
The awards, announced by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), recognise excellence in civil engineering across the region. The Fowlea Brook scheme, delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency, Jackson Civil Engineering and Arup, was recognised for its innovative, low-carbon design and outstanding collaborative delivery.
WSP Binnies played a key role in the integrated delivery team, providing project management and Ecological Clerk of Work services to help embed environmental performance and biodiversity enhancements throughout the scheme.
Located in Stoke-on-Trent, the project has transformed a long-standing flood risk challenge into a resilient, future-ready asset, protecting communities while supporting regeneration and environmental enhancement.
The judges of the Carbon and Sustainability Award highlighted the scheme as a national example of low-carbon infrastructure, with the project team adopting a PAS-2080-aligned retrofit approach to upgrade existing assets and reduce embodied carbon.
The Team Achievement Award reflects the highly collaborative nature of the project, with partners working side-by-side to overcome the constraints of a complex, urban site. Commenting on the win, Geraint Laidlaw-Wilson, Flood, Coast & Maritime PMO Director at Binnies, highlighted how the achievement “means a lot given how well the teams… have collaborated across a challenging project in a very urbanised area with nearly every project constraint you could think of”.
