Binnies is delighted to celebrate Giovanna Tiboni, Civil Engineer, on her appointment as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) Early Careers President Elect for 2026–2027, a prestigious leadership role within the institution.
CIWEM formally announced Giovanna’s selection in February, recognising her outstanding contribution to the sector and her commitment to championing early career professionals.
Giovanna brings to this role technical expertise, international experience and a deeply people‑centred approach to water and environmental management. Her career spans water resources consultancy work in Brazil, academic research on global water inequalities and innovative project delivery across the UK water sector, experience that CIWEM notes gives her a “uniquely global perspective”.
In her feature My route to chartership with CIWEM, Giovanna shares how her engineering journey has been shaped by the profound social and environmental dimensions of water. Studying in Brazil, she learned that more than 35 million people lacked access to safe drinking water, and over 100 million lived without adequate sanitation, a realisation that changed what engineering meant to her.
Her early work delivering water resources management plans across Brazil exposed her to the relationship among technical evidence, public policy and long‑term community outcomes. Later, working in the UK water sector, she strengthened her understanding of how innovation, data and regulatory performance drive resilience and efficiency in water systems.
Today, Giovanna’s career sits at the intersection of these experiences: combining technical delivery, climate and environmental research, and global advocacy. Reflecting on her appointment, Giovanna describes feeling honoured to take on this role within CIWEM, an institution that has been central to her mentoring, professional development and chartership journey.
She says she is particularly excited about continuing to create safe, collaborative spaces where early and mid‑career professionals feel confident sharing ideas, asking questions and contributing to sector-wide conversations.
Giovanna sees knowledge flow between generations as a powerful asset to the profession, combining the digital fluency and fresh perspectives of emerging professionals with the judgement and experience of established leaders.
Giovanna’s vision for her early careers presidency is clear: to build a CIWEM community where professionals at all stages of their development feel they belong and where their experiences and perspectives matter.

Her own experiences working across the Global North and Global South have shown her how water challenges differ dramatically across contexts, from drought and desertification to efficiency, regulatory compliance and climate resilience. Giovanna believes her CIWEM role will directly complement her work at Binnies.
