Good vibes spread among the amey-binnies team

We are delighted that the amey–binnies (ab) joint venture has been successful in winning a good practice award at the VIBES – Scottish Environment Business Awards 2021. This demonstrates our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.

The joint venture is among 35 businesses from across Scotland chosen to receive a good practice award at the event, which is held each year to recognise and showcase best practice. The awards recognise organisations that have demonstrated significant business benefits from good environmental practice. In the year that COP26 is coming to Glasgow, the 2021 awards also celebrate the progress that businesses have made towards reaching net-zero carbon emissions.

As part of the ab annual business plan for 2019/20, a target of a 10% reduction in carbon emissions was set for the design and development stage. The design team was set a challenge of developing feasibility studies through to detailed “for construction” designs with a reduced carbon impact. In that year, the ab design team achieved a 26% reduction in carbon impact through the detailed design phase, thus exceeding the 10% business target by some margin. The measured carbon impact fell from 13,100 to 9750 tonne carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e), a reduction representing an equivalent of about 540 round-the-world car journeys.

Specific examples of carbon reduction through the design process, coupled with other initiatives, demonstrate improved environmental performance against the COP26 themes:

Mitigation – securing global net zero: ab 2019/20 design-stage carbon reduction.

Adaptation – protecting communities and habitats: implementing efficient wastewater infrastructure projects to protect communities (flooding prevention) and the environment (pollution reduction)

Collaboration – working together: ab shares design best practice with the client

Finance and investment: Individual projects have realised cost savings based on their low-carbon designs.
