Hythe Ranges sea defence project team wins Environment Agency award
Binnies is delighted that the Hythe Ranges sea defence project team, in which it was the principal designer, is a winner of the EA2025 Environment Agency Award. The project was completed in March 2021.
This award recognises individuals and teams that have excelled in delivering their work in alignment with the objectives outlined in the Environment Agency’s five-year action plan, which focuses on delivering great projects that create a better place for local communities.

The Hythe Ranges scheme is a major coastal flood defence between Hythe and Dymchurch on the UK’s south Kent coast. The scheme involved refurbishing and raising 30 timber groynes, constructing a 200-m rock revetment and adding 320,000 m3 of screened shingle to the beach. The successful delivery of this project means that 787 properties, 300 businesses, critical national infrastructure, an army firing range and hundreds of hectares of prime agricultural land now have protection from coastal flooding for the next 100 years. The standard of flood defence has been improved to protect against a flood event with a 0.5% chance of occurring in any given year.
The work was delivered entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed on time and below budget. The project’s carbon footprint was minimised to save more than 1660 t of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), including saving 490 t CO2e by realigning a sheet pile wall to reduce the total steel by 75% and using a geotextile to reduce the rock volume by 30%. The project included environmental enhancements to encourage the development of intertidal habitat: more than 70 rock pools were created and installed, some of which housed sand eels within 48 hours.
