Modelling to prevent water pollution

Kam Puvanakumar was honoured to accept a Highly Commended Water Pollution Prevention Award 2022 on behalf of Anglian Water and Binnies on Wednesday, 14 September 2022. The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) announced the winners during the award ceremony, which took place during the Contamination & Geotech Expo that was held at the NEC, Birmingham.

The Water Pollution Prevention Award, supported by the Environment Agency (EA), the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW), recognises the efforts made by business to protect the environment and ensure that all water pollution risks are managed in an effective and efficient way.

Kam said, “As we all strive to make the world a better place, it is great to be highly commended by BSIF for our collective effort to reduce pollution. This innovative process not only improves our understanding of the dynamic nature of blockage but also enables our client to proactively plan works, which improves the safety of operation teams as well as the public. Thanks to the Binnies modelling team and Anglian Water Services for allowing us to be part of this pollution mitigation initiative journey.”

Debbie Bell from Anglian Water added, “It’s really exciting to have been recognised with this award. Hydraulic modelling seems worlds apart from health and safety but using it to support a proactive cleaning programme that enables more planning and foresight into any health and safety issues we may encounter on-site shows a benefit that we’ve not exploited before!”

The entrants submitted case studies based upon their approaches. The criteria for the award were based on the entrant demonstrating a detailed understanding of their working environment in relation to preventing incidents that could lead to the pollution of the water environment, surface water or groundwater.

Each of the award entries was independently judged by the Environment Agency, which then decided upon the finalists.
