The Women in Utilities Awards shine a spotlight on the phenomenal women in the sector

Binnies is thrilled to announce that Stella Brookes has been shortlisted for the prestigious Mentor of the Year category at the Women in Utilities Awards. This recognition is a testament to her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to nurturing talent within the sector.

This year, the awards are in their inaugural event. They are the brainchild of the Women’s Utilities Network (WUN) in association with Utility Week and a pioneering tribute to the remarkable achievements of women in the sector and the organisations and individuals that champion them.

Binnies Water Utilities Director Consultancy, Rachel Pether said: “Stella’s approach to mentoring goes beyond traditional methods. She combines practical advice with emotional support, ensuring her mentees are well-equipped to tackle challenges and seize opportunities.

Stella is passionate about the value of professionalism for civil engineers

During her time with Binnies, she has supported and provided opportunities to enhance the skill set of those around her. She has developed several initiatives to achieve this vision, including peer reviewing of Initial Professional Development (IPD) content. Additionally, Stella leads a weekly IPD support session in her own time, when she provides in-person assistance and encouragement to groups of five to ten colleagues.

Stella is a key member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North Wales Graduates, Students and Technicians Committee and has developed a series of workshops for the organisation. These presentations have been well received, and more than 2000 people attended over the series of events in 2022–2023. Owing to demand, she is running these workshops again in 2023–2024, and attendance figures show an increase of approximately 80%. Stella has been praised for her attribute workshops, which have provided huge benefit to so many people working towards professional registration with the ICE, and she was awarded the ICE Certificate of Excellence for her work during 2022–2023.

Please join us in congratulating Stella on this well-deserved recognition. The ceremony is being held on 27 June at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, where Stella will celebrate with colleagues across the business who also mentor and support others.

We wish her the best of luck in the final selection.
