The Glyn Ellis Prize, Early Career Paper Competition
This annual competition is run by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) North Western and North Wales branch to provide those at the start of their career with a forum to showcase their work.
Mohammad Ahmad (Ammar), Regional Delivery Manager (Wales) for Binnies, headed up the judging team, and he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to hear from the three shortlisted nominees when they presented their papers in person. They all exhibited great presentation skills, conveying their key messages with knowledge and confidence.
Part of a community striving to improve the environment
Ammar said: “All nominees were passionate about making positive change to the water and environment sector. Their presentations covered a variety of topics, including natural flood management, water quality monitoring and socio-economic calculation tools. The presentations we heard had great solutions and options to enhance lives, communities and the environment.
“I believe that the early career professionals benefited hugely from participating in this event. It is an opportunity to be recognised for the good work they are doing and share important lessons others can learn from. On a broader note, participating in CIWEM offers opportunities for personal development and networking and to be part of a community striving to improve the environment, working towards the same goal.”
The judges had a difficult decision on their hands, but Sam Speight was the winner for his thorough options appraisal assessment when attempting to mitigate flood risk using natural flood management methods. The holistic approach considered constraints but also opportunities for environmental enhancements and stakeholder engagement so that the community was involved. Congratulations to Sam Speight and the runners-up, Scarlett Hill and Aman Khandelwal.
