Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant reaches major milestone

Binnies Hong Kong is excited to report a major milestone in its work on the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant, the first desalination plant in the city to use seawater reverse osmosis technology. The first batch of off-site prefabricated reverse osmosis (RO) modular skids produced in Nam Tong City, Jiangsu Province, China has successfully been delivered to the site for final assembly.

The RO tubes in the modular skids are the major components for removing dissolved solids during the seawater desalination process. The first batch delivery consisted of 4 skids, each 9.5 m high, 9.2 m long and 8.2 m wide, 90 t in weight and containing 236 200-mm diameter RO tubes.

The first stage of the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant will have a production capacity of 135 million litres per day (Ml/d) and will use the latest RO technology to provide Hong Kong with a strategic water resource that is not susceptible to climate change; there is provision for future expansion to an ultimate water production capacity of up to 270 Ml/d. The modular-skid desalination plant will collect seawater from nearby Joss House Bay and remove dissolved salts and impurities to turn it into potable water. Commissioning of the plant is targeted for 2023.

The project team has been working collaboratively to overcome a range of challenges regarding the prefabrication, assembly and dispatch of the RO modular skids. Two batches comprising eight skids in total have now been successfully delivered, and the final batch will be received in late December. The plant will adopt the Design for Manufacture and Assembly methodology for the installation of the RO skids to progress the construction programme and enhance the project’s efficiency, safety and quality.
