  • Location: Hong Kong
  • Location: Hong Kong
  • Client: Drainage Services Department
  • Project status: Ongoing

Project overview

The Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works serves Sha Tau Kok town in the northern New Territories, Hong Kong, neighbouring mainland China. The facility was originally commissioned in 1989 and provides secondary level treatment to sewage collected from the township. To cope with the continual development of the area, the Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works is undergoing expansion to increase the capacity from 1,660 to 5,000 m³/d and provide the option to facilitate a further increase to 10,000 m³/d.

Our role

Engineering consultant to the Drainage Services Department, the department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government responsible for drainage and sewerage services, for the expansion of the Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works and delivering services ranging from planning, design and tendering through to construction supervision

Challenges

  • Expansion of the treatment capacity by more than three times but within a very small footprint
  • Delivering a multidisciplinary project comprising a wide range of construction activities
  • Construction of a temporary sewage treatment plant without any interruptions to the existing sewage treatment services
  • Selected as a Construction 2.0 pilot project to demonstrate efficiency, high productivity and enhanced project delivery
  • Selected as a Construction 2.0 pilot project (an initiative developed by the Hong Kong government to strengthen the city’s regional leadership in construction) to effectively demonstrate efficiency, high productivity and enhanced project delivery

Solutions

  • Adoption of the compact and highly efficient moving-bed biofilm reactor sewage treatment process
  • Pilot and adopt different innovative applications to facilitate construction and enhance productivity
  • Off-site construction of major sewage tanks using a design for manufacturing and assembly approach
  • Strong partnership built with the client and contractor created mutual trust and a collaborative culture for successful project delivery

Benefits and Achievements

1
Major project achievements

Commissioning of a temporary sewage treatment plant in less than 18 months after contract commencement.

First full-scale application of the moving-bed biofilm reactor process in Hong Kong.

2
Benefits to the society and environment

The treatment capacity of the Sha Tau Kok Sewage Treatment Works has the potential to be increased by almost six times its original capacity of 1,660 to 10,000m3/day and with better treated effluent quality within the existing footprint of 5,000 m2.

Enhancing environment sustainability through using renewable energy, reusing water resources, and extensive greening.

3
Awards and recognition

NEC Contract Innovation Award 2021 winner.

First runner-up for the NEC Sustainability and Climate Resilience Award 2021.
