Project overview
This project highlighted and developed key opportunities for Scottish Water to grow its predictive maintenance capability, by optimising the condition monitoring system currently in place for Scottish Water.
The scope of work was to deliver a proof of concept to demonstrate how these condition monitoring systems can be used, what condition monitoring data tells the user and how this information can be used to inform decision-making. This initial scope covered the end-to-end process, documenting each step and defining how the process operated.

The key objectives of this initiative were to bring condition-based monitoring (CBM) into business as usual (BAU) practices and demonstrate/prove the benefits and value it brings.
Every part contained a sequence of activities that included:
- Identifying and prioritising which sites to focus on, considering risk, benefits and return on investment
- Carrying out site visits to investigate equipment
- Gathering component-specific vibration and thermography data
- Analysing data and identifying defects/potential faults
- Completing a report and raising remedial actions
- Overseeing remedial actions
- Writing business cases to document the benefits/value.
Once the proof of concept was complete, the scope of the project grew to developing more CBM capability within the team. This developed into two key workstreams for the remainder of the project. Firstly, bring online CBM systems in the BAU process. Secondly, supporting the setup of a route-based CBM team, to use handheld equipment to gather condition data during site visits. The route-based condition monitoring team was resourced by internal staff and supported by Binnies.
Binnies took a lead role in identifying opportunities to demonstrate value at the proof-of-concept phase. Through analysing data stored in online CBM platforms, faults on critical equipment were identified and followed up with site investigations. Binnies took a lead role in defining processes around CBM fault detection, analysis, escalation and corrective action. Binnies led initiatives to optimise online CBM systems, identifying gaps and liaising with suppliers to address issues. During the later stages of the project, Binnies took on a leadership and support role to establish a route-based condition monitoring team, offering guidance and advice and defining standards for the new team to work towards.
