Designing in Collaboration with Contractors

Many clients realise the value of strong collaboration between an experienced designer and the contractor in delivering their projects. With the right team this leads to cost-effective and efficient construction delivery that exceeds expectations in terms of programme, budget, safety and quality.

We work closely with contractors as an integrated team in a climate of mutual trust and collaboration, and focus on designing practical, sustainable solutions with buildability in mind. We also help secure all required consents and permits for the work; these are essential for smooth construction delivery.

When we collaborate with contractors, we involve them early in our design development to ensure that, as a team, we understand all constraints and provide the best solution for the job, which often leads to strong and long-lasting relationships.

We understand the criticality of the programme in construction. Our design teams are well rehearsed in aligning design delivery with procurement and construction requirements to shorten or ‘beat’ the programme. We also understand how to adapt designs to minimise construction risks and reduce the scale of temporary works. Where possible, our designs incorporate temporary works if they can increase effectiveness in delivery.

In 2014/15, our design teams supported the rapid emergency response following the floods on the Somerset Levels, UK, working as one team with the contractor and client and delivering the work safely, on cost and ahead of programme, which resulted in winning an award for project management.

We delivered design and build flood defence works valued at more than £100 million pounds in the most recent framework for the UK Environment Agency. This involved working closely with our contracting partners and delivering award-winning projects such as those at Derby and Keadby. Working as an integrated team with contractors often leads to innovative, cost-effective ways of delivering sustainable and adaptable flood defence works.

In Hong Kong, we have a proven track record of close collaboration with contractors to deliver the best results. Our team of designers worked as a team with the contractor in implementing a stacked process design for the construction of the Tai Po water treatment works. This greatly reduced the footprint requirement while also incorporating provisions for future treatment enhancements to meet anticipated trends in quality demands. Leveraging our extensive experience in drainage master plan studies and hydraulic design, we worked closely with the contractor to optimise the design of the Happy Valley underground storm water storage scheme, thus delivering an innovative, cost-saving and sustainable solution to alleviate the flooding problem in the heart of the city.
