Wastewater Treatment

Binnies has decades of experience in wastewater infrastructure projects that involve planning, feasibility design, detailed design, construction supervision, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance, digitisation and asset optimisation. Our expertise includes primary, secondary and tertiary treatment; dry weather flow treatment; waste-to-energy and other anaerobic biological solutions; nutrient removal; effluent reuse; disinfection; and sludge treatment. Our professionals bring extensive experience in a wide range of advanced and cost-effective wastewater treatment technologies for municipal and commercial clients.

Responding to client and regulatory needs, we have designed, built and commissioned some of the UK’s largest wastewater treatment plants, including the new sludge treatment facility and bioenergy scheme at Yorkshire Water’s Knostrop facility and the upgrade of Thames Water’s Mogden treatment works as part of the Thames Tideway Improvements Scheme. Energy and material recovery are core to our design philosophy and every opportunity is taken to reduce the carbon footprints of the capital and operational phases of our projects.

In Hong Kong, we have been involved in the planning, development and upgrading of a broad range of sewage treatment infrastructure. We have carried out a feasibility study to relocate the Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works to caverns. This involves preliminary technical and impact assessments, outline design and formulation of implementation strategies.
Binnies is also responsible for the design for upgrading the Shek Wu Hui Sewage Treatment Works, which will become the largest tertiary sewage treatment works in Hong Kong. Innovative treatment systems, including the first thermal hydrolysis process unit in Hong Kong, will be installed to improve biogas yield for electricity and reduce the plant’s reliance on conventional fuels. With the addition of new community co-use provisions, such as an ecology garden and a riverside walkway, the plant will be transformed into an ‘environmental campus’ to serve the local neighbourhood.

We are involved in the planning of the upgrade of the Tai Po Sewage Treatment Works, which comprises effluent reuse and co-digestion facilities for imported sewage sludge and pretreated food waste. These facilities have effectively achieved environmental protection goals through sustainable treatment, optimum biosolids use and economic value.

We have a significant history of designing wastewater treatment facilities across South East Asia. As an example, at the Kranji Water Reclamation Plant in Singapore, we designed the first egg-shaped digesters in South East Asia. Using our subject matter expertise, we have developed design standards for Maynilad Water Services in the Philippines. Currently, we are providing programme management services for the 800-ML/d Tuas Water Reclamation Plant in Singapore as part of the overall Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Phase 2 project for PUB, the national water agency.
