Desalination
Binnies desalination experience extends over five decades from when work started on the Lok On Pai desalter in Hong Kong. At 182 ML/d capacity, it was then the largest multi-stage flash desalination facility in the world. Since then, we have stayed at the forefront of such technology and continue to develop internationally recognised, award-winning desalination facilities around the world, including in Singapore and Hong Kong. We provide owner’s engineering services, studies and pilot plants, conceptual and detailed engineering design, construction and commissioning, and services for all types of desalination processes and water sources.
Our dominance in this sector is demonstrated through the award-winning and innovative projects we have done. We are currently supervising the construction of the 270 ML/d Tseung Kwan O desalination plant in Hong Kong after successfully completing its feasibility study and design. In Singapore, we were the detailed designer of the 137 ML/d SingSpring desalination plant and received a distinction in the Desalination Plant of the Year category at the 2006 Global Water Awards. The judges described the plant as “a brilliant work of engineering which has challenged the global perception that desalination is a high cost source of water.” Binnies acted in the capacity of owner’s engineer to PUB for Singapore’s iconic Marina East desalination plant, the first inland, dual source water feed desalination plant, with a capacity of 137 ML/d, which was commissioned in 2020. We were also owner’s engineer to PUB for the Tuaspring (now Tuas South) desalination plant commissioned in 2013. At 318 ML/d, it is PUB’s largest public-private partnership venture, and the plant was co-developed with a power plant to reap water–power synergies.
Currently, Binnies is providing project management, detailed design and construction supervision services for another 137 ML/d desalination project located at Jurong Island, and we are involved in four of the five desalination design-build-own-operate projects in Singapore.
