We recognise that the impact humankind has had on the Earth is significant and is causing adverse impacts around the globe. Climate change is causing a diverse range of changes that are impacting on our lives and livelihoods.

As an environmental services provider, Binnies must take action now if it is to contribute in any way to slowing down the rate of climate change at a root-cause level.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) provide a global framework that recommends positive steps countries and individuals can take to lower their impact on climate change. These include a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, and the UK has pledged this will be achieved by 2050. Binnies, as part of the wider RSK group, shares this commitment and, to help the UK achieve its goals, has aligned its business goals with the SDGs. We are committed to significantly reducing our carbon footprint and we support and advise our clients on their journeys towards net zero.

In response to the climate emergency, we have developed processes and procedures to quantify and baseline the scale of this challenge at a business or enterprise level.

Our flood modelling capability includes an allowance for climate change to future proof the solutions. This risk-based approach enables us to understand the resilience needs of communities and assets. Our digital products and services, combined with satellite data capture, enable us to track the risks associated with landscape change, pollution awareness, and vegetation and tree-canopy growth. Our data analytics expertise includes predictive artificial intelligence machine learning to develop informed and accurate views of future asset performance, thereby saving operational energy and improving the performance of assets for our customers. Our TOTEX Efficiency Diagnostics (TED) provides a single version of the truth and enables balancing total expenditure portfolio performance to maximise value and minimise energy and operational consumables.

Our spatial GIS systems use the latest biodiversity metrics and net-gain calculations to evaluate environments at scale, supported by localised assessments in the field.

Our designs for projects such as the Environment Agency’s River Thames Scheme are generating impressive carbon reduction figures, including an 80% reduction of landfill material by the creation of an amenity asset that also enhances biodiversity. This will also save more than 2,000 lorry movements.

We consider embedded and operational carbon. Using an innovative approach on the Glencorse Water Treatment Works project in Scotland, we arranged for the manufacture of large-diameter polyethylene pipes on-site, which lowers carbon by reducing transportation needs and minimises the number of joints to reduce leakage.

At sea, we are working to evaluate and reduce carbon emissions from vessels as diverse as ferries and supertankers through the baselining and additive benefits assessment of fuel efficiency measures above and below the waterline. These measures can save up to 15% in emissions, with associated cost benefits, on like-for-like voyages.
