Geotechnical engineering

Civil engineering schemes can be significantly influenced by the ground conditions of the site, and ‘unexpected ground conditions’ account for a substantial number of project overruns and claims each year. Binnies’ expert team of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists can reduce ground risk at all stages of a project.

We offer comprehensive desk studies of existing data to understand the preliminary ground risks at the conceptual design stage. We are experienced in producing ground investigation specifications and contract documents to quantify the risks highlighted in the desk study and can assist with procurement, either through our RSK group investigation contractors or by competitive tender. Once on site, we provide high-quality supervision to the ground investigation to maximise the value of the works undertaken and refine the investigation in light of the conditions encountered. We also provide laboratory test scheduling services to obtain the data required for subsequent interpretation.

After the ground investigation work, we offer an interpretation of the factual investigation data and provide geotechnical design services covering all areas, including shallow and deep foundations, slope stability and remediation, ground improvement, earthworks specifications and inspections, dams and flood defences. We have extensive experience of all ground conditions from the softest compressible peats to the hardest igneous rocks and everything in-between. We have a long history of design-and-build contracts, and pride ourselves that our designs are easy to construct, value for money and pragmatic.

To complement our geotechnical engineering offering, we also have a contaminated land team who can provide advice when working on brownfield sites. The team offer expertise in investigating contaminated land; this include reporting on human health risk in light of current and ever-evolving legislation, and providing remediation advice where required. The team also provide advice on wastes arising from construction works to ensure the cheapest legal route is followed.
