Carbon and sustainability
As humankind’s activities cause climate change, we are becoming more aware of the imperative to reduce our carbon emissions to help provide a sustainable long-term solution for shaping a world in which we can all thrive.
Although global carbon emissions continue to grow, many countries and trading blocks are taking action to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. Many sectors and businesses, as well as individuals, are also making pledges to reduce carbon and increase the sustainability of the way in which we live.
This can be reflected in global initiatives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), national legislation and through to business pledges and personal commitments.
Across this spectrum of desired changes, Binnies will be at your side to support you and provide solutions to help reduce carbon, improve your corporate sustainability and incorporate sustainable solutions into your projects.
Our expertise in the legislation of sustainability and the promotion of alternative approaches will enhance the ‘build back better’ approach currently being adopted.
Our work with farmers and landowners in reducing pollution and increasing biodiversity is delivering benefits at local and regional scales. Our capability for biodiversity quantification and land classification to promote improvements is gaining momentum and being adopted by councils and landowners. By linking existing databases, legislation and remote imaging, and supported by a local ‘boots on the ground’ capability, we have been able to promote green solutions, generate additional funding and improve water quality by reducing pollution. This improvement, as an indicator of natural capital, reduces the need for ‘end-of-pipe’ solutions, thus saving costs and reducing chemical usage. It also has significant environmental benefits, including reducing carbon emissions.
On major projects, we engage with communities to understand their desire for change to a more socially aware and sustainable environment. The resulting assets can enhance the well-being of those living in the area as well as the level of biodiversity.
Our engineering solutions consider embedded and operational carbon within the design. We provide, with our RSK joint-venture partner Salix, an environmentally aware range of solutions from river restoration to peat regeneration. This approach moves away from hard engineering measures to more natural and free-form solutions. We harvest local flora and fauna before construction projects, grow and propagate these seeds in our in-house nurseries, and replant after the schemes have been completed, thus preserving native species and local environments.
