Habitat creation and management

At a time when the concepts of sustainable development, carbon neutrality, biodiversity net gain, flood risk reduction, rewilding and climate change reduction are no longer side issues in the environmental sector but are mainstream consenting issues driven by government policy. Delivering solutions for critical human infrastructure often means creating and managing habitats as an intrinsic part of the project objectives.

Appropriate and ecologically sensitive habitat creation drawing on nature-based solutions that enhance the existing environment for improving both biodiversity and human well-being is often required at the strategic planning level for projects large and small. Binnies, working with Salix, RSK ADAS and RSK Habitat Management, is at the forefront of this vital area of work and is bringing digital solutions to the effective planning and execution of habitat creation and management. From strategic planning via remote sensing and mapping to digitally managed ecological surveys and ‘spade-and-shovel’ habitat creation, Binnies offers a complete solution capability. Solutions by Nature is a joint venture between Binnies and RSK Salix that specialises in river restoration and wetland habitat creation and management.

Solutions by Nature

Solutions by Nature can design, build and manage integrated wetland habitat solutions for a range of infrastructure challenges. Examples include reed-bed aeration and attenuation of Heathrow Airport contaminated surface water runoff, and the creation of an 18-ha wetland system to attenuate and control storm- and wastewater runoff at Twycross Zoo.

Harnessing the skills of our dedicated environmental services and environmental consultancy teams at Binnies together with the technical capabilities of our RSK partner companies and the digital and remote-sensing capabilities of our partner Rezatec, we can plan, execute, deliver and manage habitat creation for our clients in a fully integrated way. This is born out of our experience working collaboratively with local communities and conservation trusts on some of the most challenging and innovative habitat creation projects in the UK.

Burton Washlands is one such project in which, by delivering a nature-based solution for flood control and habitat creation over 630 ha in East Staffordshire and utilising digital and remote-sensing techniques at the planning stage, Binnies was able to draw in some £2.5 million of investment.

In an ancient woodland translocation project near Calvert in Buckinghamshire for Fusion on HS2, RSK’s Habitat Management Team planned and executed the successful translocation of 1.5 ha of ancient woodland including soils, humic materials and trees, and is undertaking the ongoing management of the habitat in close consultation with Natural England and local Woodland Trust groups.

Chester Wetlands and Green Link is a further example of our capability in the design of a 76-ha nature restoration site in Chester, which includes 37 ha of woodland, 27 ha of semi-natural grassland and 12 ha of wetland, links into the strategic ambitions of The Mersey Forest and Cheshire Wildlife Trust and involves working closely with local residents and councils.
