Flood-risk modelling and hydrology
Flood-risk management can be a leap into the unknown. Although we increasingly see the effects of flooding, accurate computational modelling and predictions of hydrology are required to provide context for what we are seeing and to help us understand what the impacts truly look like.
Binnies employs a pool of expert modellers, hydrologists and engineers across the UK who are capable of supporting the broadest flood-risk needs. We have key experts who are familiar with the form, function and hydrology of many catchments in the UK and the processes for ensuring that they are accurately modelled. We also have extensive experience with most modelling and hydrology software packages used commonly in the UK and around the world.
The Environment Agency has trusted us to develop some of its most complex river models, such as for the rivers Thames, Trent and Humber. We also deliver modelling for Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru/Natural Resources Wales, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Office of Public Works in Ireland. However, we are fundamentally proportionate in our approach. If a scheme will benefit from simplicity, then we are able to apply simple watershed-modelling techniques and derive runoff models; this strategy ensures that we can tailor our output to suit the need.
We have considerable experience of peer reviewing models by others, including the delivery of a number of reviews through national modelling and forecasting technical support frameworks. Our experienced team can deliver peer reviews against a variety of modelling packages, including Flood Modeller 1D/2D, ESTRY/TUFLOW, MIKE11/MIKE21, InfoWorks RS/CS/ICM, HEC-RAS, FEH, REFH and WINFAP.
Our hydrology expertise is also considerable. As well as reviewing the lower Thames hydrology for the Environment Agency’s River Thames Scheme, we undertook a large hydrological study of the upper Thames for the Oxford Flood Risk Management Strategy that made extensive use of lock ‘tackle sheets’ to extend the period of record available.
Because of recent secondments to the Environment Agency modelling and forecasting, partnership and strategic overview, and national capital projects management service teams, we have an in-depth understanding of the technical and political pressures facing the Environment Agency. Our approach for this contract aims at delivering a robust and defendable right-first-time review and support function.
