We are accredited as carbon neutral against corporate activities for the financial reporting year 2022

“This represents another step in our path towards a sustainable future,” said Scott Aitken, Managing Director of Binnies. “As part of the RSK Group, Binnies supports the Pledge to Net Zero. We recognise the UK government’s ambitions to deliver net zero by 2050 and we know that this is an investment in all our futures.”

Keith Offergelt, Quality and Environment Systems Manager for Binnies, said, “In 2008, Binnies (then Black & Veatch) put in place a framework to measure, manage and monitor its carbon (greenhouse gas) emissions. This has been through the Achilles CEMARS scheme, now called the Achilles Carbon Reduce (powered by Toitu) scheme. We have achieved a milestone in attaining the ISO 14064-1 carbon zero certification by having reduced our emissions year-on-year and then offsetting our residual emissions of 355 tCO2e by using carbon credits verified by the VERRA and VCS offset standard, which are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and those of our business.

We recognise that we are on a path and have our next target firmly in sight. We are using this point to help the business to review and refocus its efforts as we continue to move to net zero.”

Binnies, part of the Sustainable Engineering Solutions division of RSK, has developed a Sustainability Action Plan around 5 pillars:

  • Safety, health, quality and continuous improvement
  • Our people and ethics
  • Environment and communities
  • Clients and suppliers
  • Finance and governance

These pillars guide the way we deliver innovative and sustainable solutions and are underpinned by our ENGAGED principles. This means that all that we do enhances lives, communities and the environment and contributes to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Binnies has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including, for example, reviewing facilities to reduce energy consumption and improve the efficiency of equipment. We continue to support flexible working, and with our offices situated close to major public transport hubs, continue to promote sustainable modes of travel that include active management to reduce car mileage.

Binnies understands that achieving carbon neutrality is a small step on our path to net zero, which involves reducing and offsetting all greenhouse gases, not just carbon. We are committed to continually reviewing and improving our sustainability practices to ensure that we enhance lives, communities and the environment. We believe that by working together, we can create a more sustainable future for all.
