Supporting early careers in the sector

The The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) Early Career Professionals Conference 2025 provides an opportunity for early career professionals to network with other water and environmental managers to see what sector looks like for their future.

Binnies early career professionals are participating in two sessions

Climate change, water and women: Impacts in Brazil’s desertification hubs

Giovanna Tiboni presents the topic, which explores the intersection of climate change, water, and gender in Brazil’s semi-arid regions. Focusing on areas known as Desertification Hubs, her work examines how rising temperatures and increasing water scarcity are affecting vulnerable communities. Through surveys and interviews conducted across 16 municipalities, Giovanna found that older women, as well as Black and Indigenous women, are disproportionately affected by heatwaves, food insecurity, and restricted access to water. Her research highlights the importance of inclusive climate adaptation strategies that address social inequalities and support the leadership role of women in managing water at both household and community levels.

From overflow to opportunity: A data-driven approach to SuDS viability across 79 catchments

James Garling and Katie Allsopp’s presentation introduces a SuDS Viability Assessment method applied across 79 CSO catchments in the AWS region, developed by Binnies in collaboration with the @one Alliance. It uses a scalable, semi-automated approach combining geospatial analysis, network modelling, and a custom RAG framework to identify optimal SuDS locations – highlighting how early career professionals can drive innovation while navigating the challenges of cross-sector collaboration and evolving client needs.
