People are at the core of everything we do

The Flood & Coast 24 event brought together professionals across the flood and coastal erosion risk management (FCERM) community to discuss innovative ways of working together and with the communities most affected by flooding and coastal erosion in today’s changing climate.

The conference is organised by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), which believes that the right people – engaged, inspired and educated in the right way about the very real challenges that our planet faces – will make the seemingly difficult-to-achieve possibilities probable and in turn, create tangible positive outcomes for people and planet. This is why CIWEM exists, and why it does what it does.

As a sponsor of the event, we were thrilled to partner with CIWEM and the other awards sponsors to develop the CIWEM Spotlight Awards. Believing that people are at the core of everything we do, we chose to celebrate individuals who had gone above and beyond to deliver positive momentum in line with CIWEM’s purpose of “people, planet, possibility”.

The CIWEM Spotlight Awards introduced three categories:

The People category

Individuals who have inspired, enabled, encouraged or facilitated the development of their peers in the sector or created safe, inclusive environments that contribute to the same purpose. With a people focus, we can achieve greater outcomes for people, planet and possibility, together.

The Planet category

Individuals who strive to deliver, or have continuously delivered, positive impacts for the environment in which they work, live or champion: those who have contributed to changes in approach, policy or engagement, resulting in direct and obvious positive outcomes for the planet. Individuals who can create mechanisms and inspire people delivering positive outcomes for people, planet and possibility.

The Possibility category

Individuals who are agents of change. Those who have taken what was seemingly just a possibility and led from the front to turn it into a probability, or even a reality. An innovator, a motivator or a leader who just makes things happen. Someone who sees a way forward where others do not, walks the path they’ve discovered and takes others along the journey.

Recognising outstanding individuals in the sector

We are thrilled that Fran Moore was highly commended in the Possibility category for her excellent work in valuing the environment and in seeking opportunities to gain funding based on that, through natural capital and more broad environmental economics.

Fran commented, “It was fantastic to be recognised at the CIWEM Spotlight Awards. At this crucial point in humanity, we must challenge what we think is possible and reach beyond. Evidencing the impact of our deteriorating natural world upon economic and financial wealth, via environmental economics, is absolutely crucial to making better decisions and building a more resilient future for us all. It’s great to be part of a talented team here at Binnies, helping our clients with this transition.”

Fran Moore is Binnies’ natural capital specialist, with over 15 years’ experience in valuing the benefits of nature recovery for investment planning. Her work helps to shape infrastructure programmes in the UK; she recently set up a Natural Capital Assessment Framework for the River Thames Scheme for the Environment Agency: currently the largest flood risk infrastructure project in the UK. Fran is currently working on projects aligning nature recovery opportunities with ‘routes to market’ (carbon codes, biodiversity net gain, nutrient neutrality) via innovative finance mechanisms.

Well done, Fran!
