Winners of the Large Project award and the Sustainability award
The Keadby Terminal Assisted Outfall Project has achieved two wins at the Institution of Civil Engineers East Midlands Merit Awards: an innovative project that cut carbon by 90% and reduced costs by an impressive £12 million.
We at Binnies, along with our partners, attended the award ceremony on 9 June in Nottingham, where our joint venture work with Galliford Try on this project was recognised as we won both the Large Project Award and the Sustainability Award.
The Sustainability Award is given at the judge’s discretion and is awarded to a project that showcases a high level of compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).
Previous business cases had failed to find a viable solution but Binnies reduced costs by £12 million through an alternative design, enabling the reuse of the building structure and thus avoiding a complete rebuild. This cost reduction made the project viable and reduced the carbon footprint of the project by 90%.
Environment Agency Area Flood and Coastal Risk Manager (Notts and the Tidal Trent) Paul Lockhart said, “I am delighted that the Keadby Terminal Assisted Outfall Project received East Midlands ICE MERIT Awards in both the Large Project and Sustainability categories. The awards are a fitting testimony to the excellent collaboration between ourselves and our key partners, Binnies UK, Arcadis, Galliford Try and WSP, and reflect the creativity and hard work of a very high performing team.”
Binnies Water Utility Delivery Director Tim O’Brien said: “This project showcases sustainability and collaboration to deliver a £35 million project providing resilient flood risk management for the region.
“Keadby Pumping Station is an important asset, protecting homes, businesses and agricultural land from flooding. The terminal assisted outfall (TAO) required upgrading and modernisation to ensure the continued operation of the pumping station, as resilience and reliability had been lost due to age, obsolescence and general wear and tear, resulting in the need for a major investment.
“A huge thank you to Galliford Try and our partners WSP and Arcadis for the seamless collaboration and shared passion for sustainable engineering.”
