The talented next-generation of engineers
On Friday, 24 November, the New Civil Engineer (NCE) Graduate and Apprentice Awards will take place in London. A total of six individuals picked from a line-up of talented next-generation engineers will be crowned within three award categories in front of high-profile industry members. The event is designed to “recognise and reward the most inspiring civil engineering graduates and apprentices”.
Binnies is proud to share that Dylan Powell, Graduate Civil Engineer, has been nominated as a finalist in this year’s awards. After graduating from the University of Portsmouth in 2022 with a first-class degree, Dylan stepped onto the career ladder and joined Binnies UK, where he has been working for the past 11 months. Dylan is currently on the Binnies Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) approved training scheme, working towards Chartered Engineer status.
Significant contributions to the sector through Binnies project activity
Dylan’s work ethic has been exemplary over the last year, as he spearheaded significant contributions to the sector through Binnies project activity, such as working on the Millbrook Water Treatment Works. Dylan led the development of a distribution chamber that needed an additional weir – this chamber needed a precise non-uniform flow split. Through innovative thinking and a great deal of initiative, Dylan completed several computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models that determined whether the narrow weirs would be able to pass the flow without breaching the coping level. After several iterations of the model, a solution was identified by Dylan and implemented, which consequently provided huge carbon and cost savings.
Aside from Dylan’s outstanding technical proficiency within Binnies, he has established himself as a key figure in the business, leading the Redhill office social committee, as a part of the People Focus Group, heading charity events and as an enthusiastic voice in continuing professional development as the creator of the Binnies Early Career Professional Forum.
