The Flood Modeller conference is taking place at the University of Leeds and the programme of presentations covers a wide range of topics, including user case studies, regulatory updates, and hands-on workshops.
Presentation: ‘Sediment transport modelling for the River Thames Scheme’
Chief Engineer, Rob Fraser, is presenting at 10.30am on day two in room one. His topic is ‘Sediment transport modelling for the River Thames Scheme’.
The presentation will discuss the modelling undertaken by Binnies for the design of the River Thames Scheme (RTS).
The focus of the presentation will be on how the river modelling, undertaken using Flood Modeller, underpins many aspects of the RTS scheme design, and the wide variety of modelling approaches employed, including the sediment transport modelling of the scheme.
The presentation will cover the methods used in the sediment transport modelling and show how this was used to assess the likely erosion and deposition within the flood channel; design the scour protection for the channel, understand the maintenance requirements (frequency of desilting needed), and assess the impact of the RTS on sediment in the remaining River Thames.
The presentation will also give a brief description of other interesting recent aspects of the RTS modelling such as developing the green infrastructure landscape design and assessing flood risk during construction.
Presentation: ‘Allowing the fish to pass’.
Tim Paddison, Principal Modeller, is presenting on day one at 15.30. The topic of his presentation is ‘Allowing the fish to pass’.
The modelling of fish passes can present a different set of challenges to modelling flood flows. Fish have a range of conditions that need to be met to keep them happy and allow them to migrate upstream to spawn, and different species have different requirements.
This presentation focuses on two sites located on an upland stream in south Wales, for which Binnies designed fish passes as part of a wider project commissioned by Natural Resources Wales.
The examples show how Flood Modeller can be used to test different options, aid the refinement of fish pass designs, assess the impacts on flood risk and ultimately lead to their successful construction.
This event will be a great opportunity to meet with other flood modelling experts so we hope to see you there.
