Playing a vital role in overseeing the Wessex Reservoir MIOS
Located in the Somerset Moors, Binnies are working on three Reservoirs that store 20.7million m3 of water, equating to 8,280 Olympic size swimming pools. The reservoirs are dry most of the time and only fill up during flood conditions. They also enable agricultural practices to continue most of the year.
Binnies plays a vital role in overseeing the Wessex Reservoir MIOS works as a Site Supervisor team, ensuring compliance with the Reservoirs Act 1975. These works are critical as they address Measures in the Interests of Safety (MIOS) to mitigate risks posed due to flooding. Binnies, representing the client, ensures that the contractors’ works are performed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency as outlined under the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC).
Supervisors play a proactive role in tracking project milestones
There is also significant archaeological interest within the sites, as remains of a field system and a rare interconnected double round houses were found and recorded during the works. A piece of iron age pottery was found during part of the earthworks, and this now forms part of the collection at Taunton Museum.
The site supervisors are tasked with maintaining close communication with the client, ensuring their objectives are met, particularly regarding the quality and financial aspects of the works. Key responsibilities include assessing the contractor’s performance, reviewing financial information for payment certification, and providing detailed progress updates through regular site visits. With the team attending every day throughout the week, the supervisors play a proactive role in tracking project milestones and ensuring the smooth delivery of the works.
Additionally, Binnies site supervisors are instrumental in resolving technical queries when discrepancies arise between the detailed and initial designs, ensuring consultation with the original designers. They also assist the Environmental Clerk of Works and contribute to managing health, safety, and welfare on-site, working closely with the Client to evaluate Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS) and ensure accurate tracking.
Accurate record-keeping, both written and photographic, is essential to validate any claims for delay or damages. Moreover, the supervisors liaise with local stakeholders including farmers, homeowners and tenants to ensure minimal disruption, fostering clear communication about product choices and operational aspects.
With qualifications, including the CITB Site Supervisors course, and extensive experience in flood storage reservoirs, Binnies ensures the Wessex Reservoir project remains compliant, safe, and successful.
