Effective delivery at a catchment scale

In December 2024, Matt Clegg, Binnies Environment Director, participated in the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) inaugural Fresh Water Future Conference.

Matt brought his extensive experience in the development and delivery of multi-benefit infrastructure projects for both the public and private sectors to the topic of ‘Effective delivery at a catchment scale.’

He has successfully led projects, from strategic planning to on-site implementation, that enhances natural capital through delivery of green infrastructure, including river restoration, wetlands and broader habitat creation schemes. Under Matt’s leadership, these initiatives have secured funding, demonstrating environmental improvement and sustainable development.

The conference built on the Fresh Water Future report that was launched in January 2024 as an independently-facilitated and co-created expert and public manifesto for the next UK government to recover the health and resilience of our rivers, streams, lakes and coastal waters through an ambitious yet achievable package of measures.

CIWEM delivered the second Fresh Water Future Conference in December 2025. In advance of the Government’s Water White Paper, water management experts discussed and built a consensus on how to effectively implement the scrutiny and recommendations over the past year and more.

CIWEM updated the accompanying report for the even, ‘A Fresh Water Future? Progress and priorities for 2025’. The report includes an opinion piece from Matt exploring the world of financing catchment and nature-based solutions: The state of nature markets in the UK.
