A true asset to Binnies
We are thrilled to announce that graduate civil engineer Naomi Betts is a finalist in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North West Rising Star award category.
Naomi’s first year at Binnies has provided her with opportunities to work across a range of projects, including a secondment to United Utilities, design services for the development of a new port and detailed design solutions for the reduction of combined sewer outfall spills at wastewater treatment sites. She has received great feedback, praising her “proactive approach, excellent interpersonal skills and communication, technical ability and excellent level of information”.
Promoting women in engineering
Naomi’s key interest is using a nature- and people-positive approach in understanding how to effectively utilise emerging technologies. She strives for improvements at project and industry level, promoting women in engineering and encouraging early careers professional engagement. This has included volunteering as part of the RSK Women’s Network.
Naomi also mentors interns and engages graduates at Binnies through project work, socials and knowledge sharing workshops. She has delivered two different knowledge sharing presentations on an innovative potable water pipeline rehabilitation investigative project, sharing her passion for engineering and the environment, and continues to explore this enthusiasm in her work by designing nature-based solutions, for example, reed beds for wastewater treatment, promoting triple bottom line sustainability with a focus on UN Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 11.
Naomi said, “I am looking forward to further developing my career, focusing on my particular interests, which include engaging with my professional community and effectively applying tools such as AI to enhance resource allocation and accelerate best practices in the industry.”
