The annual River Restoration Centre Conference brings together over 400 professionals to discuss themes such as large wood, chalk stream restoration, land management and much more. It is being held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Brighton Metropole in Brighton.

Binnies Senior Fluvial Geomorphologist, Neil Burrows, is giving a poster presentation on the River Coquet Catchment Mapping for the Local Nature Recovery Strategy.

Binnies UK and Natural England worked collaboratively on a new approach for integrating water into the Local Nature Recovery Strategy process, following catchment-scale, ‘source-to-sea’ principals. The approach is based on new guidance produced by Natural England which sets out a proposed workflow for integrating water into LNRS planning.

Binnies have developed novel spatial analysis methodologies to process and present existing spatial datasets to reveal nature-weighted enhancement opportunities within the Wansbeck catchment, Northumberland. The completed work represents a first attempt at executing the guidance, the outputs of which provide a strategic catchment map of water-related nature enhancement opportunities. Crucially, the workflow considers the catchment as a singular, interconnected unit, and generates opportunities within three distinct catchment zones: headwaters, middle catchment, and lower catchment. This promotes a ‘source to sea’ approach acknowledging that water flows and accumulates with movement downstream, reflecting any positive or negative consequences of upstream habitat or land use.
