The European Wastewater Management Conference provides an essential annual update on the latest innovations, best practice, cutting-edge technology and research in the wastewater sector.
Civil Engineers Dylan Powell and Navdip Kaur, with Process Engineer James Kennedy have been accepted for a poster presentation on ‘The Power of Nature: Emerging Contaminants Removal with Nature-Based Solutions’.
The presentation explores how nature can help us achieve Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6, 11, 13 and 14, providing a comprehensive overview of various nature-based solutions, examining their effectiveness in removing a range of emerging contaminants from water and wastewater with a focus on key contaminants such as PFAS, microplastics, and pharmaceuticals.
Research papers and secondary data were used to draw conclusions and identify key takeaways. Additionally, they explored how nature-based solutions can address and mitigate the negative environmental and health impacts of emerging contaminants and discussed the impact of nature-based solutions on enhancing storm resilience, reducing strain on our infrastructure and mitigating the effects of climate change.
About the speakers
Dylan Powell is a Civil Engineer with Binnies. Dylan entered the emerging contaminants space through his MEng research investigating Microplastic removal through coagulation and flocculation in the wastewater treatment process.
Navdip Kaur is also a Civil Engineer at Binnies. Navdip first started looking at Emerging Contaminants whilst researching for her MSc project, which focused on the breakdown behaviour and release of organic components by plastics in the environment.
James Kennedy is a Process Engineer with Binnies. James’ interest in emerging contaminants came from investigating how different countries are responding to the challenge of implementing legislation to restrict PFAS in drinking water supplies, and how water treatment processes can be best utilised in meeting the tight legislation.
